When you first see thread cutting tools, you may think “There’s no way that will work.” We can assure you that they work amazingly well. You’ll be able to chase threads in wood for turned boxes and vessels with lids or any other project you could think of.
We recommend using dense close-grained woods like maple or cherry. Open-grained woods like walnut and oak are prone to tear out.
Sorby’s Thread Cutting tools come in three pitches – 10 tpi, 16 tpi and 20 tpi. The finer pitches are easier for beginners. Each set includes two tools – one for internal threads with the teeth at 90 degrees to the handle and one for external threads with the teeth on the tip of the tool.
While you can chase threads with only these tools, we recommend these tools to make thread chasing easier.
- 973 Sizing Gauge – this specialized calipermakes sizing the inside and outside compnents before threading much easier. It has threeanvils – for 10tpi, 16 tpi and 20tpi threads – that automatically compensate for the size differencesinherent inherent to each thread pitch.
- 895H Relief Cutting Tool – thistool cuts a recess at the bottom of the internally threaded workpiece so it’s easier tochase without hitting the bottom. (If you hit the bottom while the threader is engaged,it will damage the threads you’ve been chasing.)
- 893H Threading and Relief Cutting Tool Support- this tool supports the relief cutting tool or the internal threading tool. It give more controland support when performing these operations.
